The Nigeria Correctional Service, Imo State, says about 1,383 of its inmates produce shoes, bags, soaps, sandals, and other items as a result of its skill acquisition and empowerment programme.
This was revealed by the delegation from the Correctional Service led by the Comptroller of the Service, in charge of custodian centre, Eke. C. Eke during a visit to the office of Imo State Ministry Of Women Affairs and Social Welfare.
According to Commissioner of the Ministry, Lady Nkechinyere Ugwu, the delegation came to her office to commend the wife of the state governor, Chioma Uzodimma for passing through her Ministry to provide skills acquisition, empowerment kits, foodstuffs, wears, sleeping mats to the inmates.
She said according to the Eke, the inmates are making judicious use of the items in their reformation journey at the Correctional facility and have started producing economic goods .
She said: “Yesterday, 31st October, I received a delegation from the Nigerian Correctional Service, Imo State, who came to commend the wife of the governor of Imo State, Her Excellency Chief Barr. Chioma Uzodimma, who, through my ministry, provided skills acquisition, empowerment kits, foodstuffs, wears, sleeping mats, etc, to the inmates.
“The delegation was led by the Comptroller of the Service, in charge of the custodian centre, Eke. C. Eke. According to the state comptroller, he said they came to extend their gratitude to Her Excellency. “Please extend our sincere appreciation to Her Excellency for all the support she has been giving to the inmates.
“The First Lady is the only person who has been supporting the inmates. The inmates are making economic use of the sewing machines, food items, and other palliatives that are helping the inmates to get reformed, rehabilitated, and empowered. She has provided support to the 1,383 inmates who are producing shoes, soaps, bags, sandals, and other items. “
