Shuaibu To Sponsor 2nd North-Central Table Tennis Tournament

Lagos-based business mogul and sports enthusiast, Shuaibu D. Mohammed, has announced his sponsorship of the 2nd edition of the North-Central Zonal Table Tennis Tournament.

The tournament, which includes Senior, Junior, and Cadet Unisex categories, is focused on discovering and nurturing young table tennis talent across the North-Central Zone of Nigeria.

The event aims to boost Nigeria’s prospects in international table tennis by creating a platform for young athletes to showcase their skills.

The competition, titled “2nd Edition Of Shuaibu D. Mohammed Table Tennis Tournament for North-Central States,” is scheduled to take place from December 12th to 14th, 2024, at the Lafia Sports Arena in Nasarawa State.

Speaking after a visit to the Nasarawa State Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, Shuaibu emphasized the importance of grassroots development in reviving the sport.

“Table Tennis is the sport of my youth, I love it so much, but it’s unfortunate that I am seeing it going down,” Shuaibu said. “My aim is to give back to society by reviving it. Nigeria has immense talent, but we lack the platform to harness it. This tournament will provide a launchpad for young players to showcase their skills and potentially represent our great nation on the global stage.”

Participants from six North-Central states—Nasarawa, Benue, Plateau, Niger, Kogi, and Kwara—will compete in three categories: Senior, Junior (ages 14-18), and Cadet (ages 10-13). Winners in each category will receive prize money, with the highest being ₦200,000 for first place.

Shuaibu further explained the choice of Lafia as the host city, citing its superior facilities and Governor Abdullahi Sule’s commitment to sports and security. The first edition of the tournament took place in Lokoja, Kogi State, in 2023.

The event underscores a broader mission to foster youth empowerment, sports development, and regional unity.
