SWAN Commends Security Operatives on Release of Kidnapped Sports Journalists

The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has expressed gratitude to security agencies following the release of several sports journalists who were abducted while traveling to Uyo to cover the first leg of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier between the Super Eagles and Libya.

SWAN’s President, Mr. Isaiah Benjamin, confirmed that the prompt response of the Nigerian Army and Police led to the release of six of the kidnapped journalists, most of whom were camera operators and photojournalists.

They were abducted along the Anambra/Imo axis. The association is still working with security agencies to secure the release of the remaining journalist.

This was mentioned in a press release “We want to inform our Teeming Members across Nigeria and beyond that some of the Sports Journalists who were earlier kidnapped on their way to cover the first leg of 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier between Super Eagles and Mediterranean Knights of Libya in Uyo, have been released.”

SWAN praised the efforts of the security operatives, noting their commitment to ensuring the safety and freedom of the media personnel.

The association reassured its members across Nigeria to remain calm and vigilant, while maintaining communication with local SWAN chapters for any further updates.

SWAN reiterated its dedication to the welfare of its members, emphasizing that the well-being and safety of journalists remain a top priority.

The released journalists are now either reuniting with their families or resuming their professional duties.

“SWAN therefore commends the Security Operatives, particularly the Nigerian Army and Police for their prompt action which ensured that up to six of the held Sports Journalists regained their freedom with efforts to get the remaining person freed.

The rescued Media Practitioners, mostly Camera/Photojournalists are now on their way to either reunite with families or move on with other official duties.

We urge our members to remain calm and without fear in the discharge of their professional duties while maintaining regular communication with the various SWAN State Chapters’ Leadership for any formal purposes.”
