Teenager Inkosi Brou Secures Nigeria’s First Medal at International Fencing Championships

Nigeria’s fencing scene made a historic breakthrough as 16-year-old Inkosi Brou captured the nation’s first-ever medal at Iceland’s World Tournoi Satellite Cup.

Competing in the Sabre category, Brou secured a silver medal after a hard-fought 9-15 final against Iceland’s Andre Mateev.

Ranked No. 67 globally, Brou entered the Viking Cup 2024, a Senior World Cup Satellite Sabre Tournament, as the No. 5 seed.

His journey began with a convincing 15-9 victory over Germany’s Magnus De Witt in Round 16. He followed that up with a close 15-13 win against Spain’s Oriol Farre in the quarterfinals.

Brou staged a thrilling upset in the semifinals, defeating No. 1 seed Cristofer Cortez of Ecuador 15-14 to reach the final.

Brou, the grandson of the late Dora Akunyili, former NAFDAC Director General, expressed his excitement, saying, “Starting the season with a silver medal at my first senior FIE competition is a huge achievement. I’m proud to represent Nigeria and continue my quest for LA 2028.”

Adeyinka Samuel, President of the Nigeria Fencing Federation, praised Brou’s efforts, calling the achievement a key milestone in the country’s preparation for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.
