NYSC explains why ₦77k allawee has not been shared

The Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Yushau Ahmed, has explained why the NYSC has yet to implement the newly approved ₦77,000 monthly allawee for all corps members.

According to the Director General, the reason why the increment was yet to take place was due to low funding as the federal government was yet to release the funds for the increment in allawee which is in line with the increment of the national minimum wage from ₦33,000 to ₦70,000.

“Not only the corps members, but even our staff members’ salaries have been increased about four to five months ago, but it has not been implemented yet. But we are hopeful that the new pay will be implemented soon, but the funds have not been released to us yet.”

Ogun state governor declares Monday as a public holiday

The governor of Ogun State, Dapo Abiodun, has proclaimed that Monday, October 7, will be a public holiday for all the teachers in the state.

The governor stated that today would be observed as a work-free day to celebrate this year’s “Teacher’s Day”.

This public holiday is extended to all teachers in public and private schools as they will all be expected to resume from October 8, 2024.

Cholera kills 359 Nigerians as it spreads across 36 states

359 people have been reported dead from Cholera disease as it spreads across all 36 states in the country.

Since the disease outbreak, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has recorded about 10,837 cases nationwide, with most victims being children under the age of five and those from five to 14.

According to reports, the states most affected by Cholera are Adamawa (131), Ebonyi (30), Borno (29), Kano (7), and Jigawa (1). 

SERAP requests that ICPC and EFCC monitor LG’s spending

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has openly requested that the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) and Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) pay close attention to the financial decisions of all local government managers to prevent illicit distribution of funds and corruption.

This demand coincides with the local government gaining financial autonomy without the state government being used as the middleman to distribute the funds from the federal government.

SERAP also called on the Minister of Finance, Wale Edun, to suspend all federal allocations to states that have refused to conduct free and fair elections in their local governments.

DisCos revenue surges to ₦887 billion

Nigeria’s electricity distribution companies have calculated a total of ₦887 billion as revenue within the first seven months of 2024 due to the rise in tariff prices for all Band As customers across the country.

Although customers have complained about having inconsistent electricity and high tariff prices, 11 DisCos have increased their revenue by 46.96% from ₦604.15 billion recorded between January and July 2023 to its current amount.

According to an analysis of data released by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), during the period under review, the distribution companies billed over ₦1 trillion but only managed to collect N887.86bn. This represents a 79.7% revenue collection efficiency in the country.
