As the countdown to the 2024 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup intensifies, Flamingos captain Taiwo Afolabi shared her thoughts in an interview with NFF TV, reflecting on her role as a returning player and the team’s aspirations.
When asked about comparing the current squad to the bronze-winning team from the 2022 edition in India, Afolabi downplayed direct comparisons, stating, “No need for comparison. Different teams, different systems. This particular team is good for the system on the ground.”
Afolabi, the only player from the previous squad, expressed confidence that the current team can surpass their predecessors. “In life, we always need to aim high. The last set won bronze, but I see this set surpassing what we did last year, and hopefully, we’ll bring the cup back home.”
On how she has impacted the team with her experience, Afolabi explained that she shares stories from the last World Cup to inspire her teammates. “I played at the last World Cup in India, and I always tell the girls my experiences to boost their morale and motivate them.”
Finally, Afolabi urged Nigerian fans to expect great football, saying, “Nigerians should expect good football, excellent performance, victory, and also the trophy.”
With the tournament fast approaching, Afolabi’s leadership and optimism are set to be a driving force as Nigeria’s Flamingos aim to make history on the world stage.
