Chairman, National Sports Commission (NSC), Mallam Shehu Dikko has made assurance of significant changes in the sector.
Dikko has promised that the NSC will operate differently, with a clear vision to unlock the sector’s full potential.
“Expectations are high. Sports is a national asset,” Dikko told TVC. “I’ve been in the system for long and I know the mistakes that were made before.”
Dikko outlined his approach to reshaping the Commission, noting the importance of accountability and innovation.
“This time it is going to be different. We will operate as a business. We are to structure the commission so that we will succeed and if we find anyone that can contribute we will bring.”
“People should hold us responsible in the next few months to see what reforms we bring,” he stated.
Emphasizing the need for strong foundations, he added, “We have to put the necessary frameworks and policies for us to be able to succeed. Sports is entitled to special funding and concessions.”
Dikko also highlighted plans to update the National Sports Commission Act, focusing on funding as a top priority. “Funding is about 80 percent of the challenge. If we can secure this, you’ll see the athletes thrive.”
Dikko officially took over from former Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Owan-Enoh, in a brief handover ceremony held in Abuja on Wednesday.
