Why women should be financially independent - Bovi

Famous comedian Bovi Ugboma has shared his thoughts on the roles of husbands and wives in the family, responding to actor Kanayo O. Kanayo’s remarks about men’s financial duties during an interview on TVC’s ‘Your View‘.

While Bovi acknowledged the cultural norm that men are expected to be the main providers, he stressed the importance of empowering women to pursue their dreams and gain financial independence.

He emphasized that when a woman contributes financially due to her passion, her efforts should be recognized and appreciated.

Bovi also highlighted the practical benefits of women being financially independent, explaining that in cases where a husband passes away or leaves, a woman would be able to support herself and her family.

“You have to understand that even those of us who are providing, our egos are easily bruised, not to talk of you sitting at home and expecting her to provide,” he said.

“And it is the spiral effect that is the issue. If you want to sit at home. If you want to do 50/50 with your wife, do it in peace. But understand that there are effects for your wives providing for you.”

Bovi affirmed that men are traditionally the providers but noted, “If a woman’s ambition drives her to contribute, you must acknowledge that power in her.”

He added, “I like a man who provides. That’s what’s cultural. But if your woman is ambitious, you need to find a balance. I provide everything in my home.”

Bovi concluded by saying that while men should provide for their families, women should be encouraged to pursue their dreams.

“And if those dreams make her financially strong, it’s a good thing. What happens if a man dies or misbehaves and tells her to leave the house? She needs to be financially secure.”
