Youth involvement crucial in tackling climate change challenges – Customs

The Nigeria Customs Service has said youth involvement is crucial in tackling climate change, saying addressing the problems is a global challenge that requires collective action.

Pledging commitment to environmental sustainability, it expressed dedication to contributing to the nation’s climate change mitigation strategies.

Comptroller Ahmadu Shuaibu of the Federal Operations Unit Zone ‘B’, Kaduna presented a paper on the NCS’s role in climate change mitigation at a three-day retreat held at the National Teachers Institute Kaduna, a statement on Friday by Customs Public Relations Officer, Federal Operations Unit, Zone B, Kaduna, Isah Sulaiman, said.

The event, themed “Youth Involvement in Tackling Climate Change in Our Community,” was jointly organised by the Red Cross Kaduna North Division and the Nigeria Customs Service Federal operations Unit Zone B Kaduna from 6 to 9 October 2024, as part of the unit’s Corporate Social Responsibility Initiative.

“Climate change is a global challenge that requires collective action. As a signatory to several Multilateral Environmental Agreements, the NCS is committed to supporting Nigeria’s climate change mitigation strategies,.

“The retreat highlighted the NCS commitment to environmental sustainability, emphasising collaborative efforts, renewable energy initiatives, sustainable trade practices, and combating wildlife trafficking.

“We must work together to address the challenges posed by climate change. The NCS is dedicated to contributing to Nigeria’s climate change mitigation efforts,” he stressed.

Shuaibu added, “Climate change is a pressing issue that requires urgent attention. We must take concrete actions to reduce our carbon footprint and promote sustainable practices.

“The retreat provided a platform for discussing innovative approaches to climate change adaptation and mitigation, including sustainable agricultural practices, renewable energy solutions, and eco-friendly policies.

“Youth involvement is crucial in tackling climate change. We must educate and empower young people to become climate champions.”

The three-day retreat concluded with organisers and participants planting trees, demonstrating their commitment to environmental sustainability and climate change mitigation.

“This initiative marks a significant step forward in Nigeria’s quest to address the pressing challenges posed by climate change. We will continue to work together to promote environmental stewardship and community engagement,” the Comptroller added.
