Diddy’s Music Streams Climb Up After News of Arrest and Indictment

Sean “Diddy” Combs’ music catalog has experienced a notable surge in streams following his arrest and indictment. According to Luminate, an industry data and analytics company, Diddy’s music saw an average 18.3% increase in on-demand streams during the week of his arrest compared to the prior week.

George Howard, a distinguished professor of music business management at Berklee College of Music, commented on the situation, noting that he is not surprised by the increase. He explained that the spike in streaming is similar to a Google search of the artist, driven by public curiosity.

“Diddy’s music just becomes another piece of information as people try to comprehend the atrocities,” Howard told The Associated Press. “It’s like, ‘What would someone whose brain works like that, allegedly, what would their music sound like?’”

Howard also mentioned that the “anonymization” of streaming might have contributed to the rise in streams for Diddy’s music. “Imagine walking into a record store now and saying, ‘Yeah, I want to buy this Diddy CD,’” he added. Combs faces federal charges of sex trafficking and racketeering, with the indictment detailing allegations that date back to 2008. He is accused of abusing, threatening, and coercing women for years “to fulfill his sexual desires, protect his reputation, and conceal his conduct.”

Despite these serious charges, Diddy’s music continues to attract attention, reflecting a complex intersection of curiosity and controversy in the public’s response. Diddy has pleaded not guilty to the charges, but the ongoing legal battle has certainly cast a spotlight on Diddy’s music catalog, leading to increased streams as listeners revisit his work amid the scandal.
