Discos Get Ultimatum to Upgrade Weak Networks

The 11 electricity distribution companies (Discos) have less than a week to replace weak distribution networks in their franchise areas, according to a new directive by the federal government.

This order, given through the Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency (NEMSA), comes after a two-month notice period for the energy firms to implement necessary changes.

NEMSA Managing Director and Chief Electrical Inspector of the Federation, Mr Tukur Aliyu, revealed this directive at the 2024 Customer Service Week in Abuja on Monday, noting that most distribution networks are old and weak, requiring upgrades to ensure safe electricity distribution.

A recent electrocution incident in Calabar led NEMSA to order the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHEDC) to upgrade its network.

However, Mr Aliyu expressed dissatisfaction with the utility’s work after two inspection visits.

According to him, upgrade directives were to replace weak distribution networks within seven days after the two-month notice period for Discos to implement changes, adding that the enforcement directives were issued to entire utility companies.

“We were surprised that they had not done it, so we issued an enforcement notice,” Mr Aliyu stated.

“Our officers are already on the ground to monitor progress and report back to headquarters.”

Mr Aliyu emphasized the importance of certified electricians for installations, enabling tracking in case of safety issues.

“To effectively mitigate hazards, ensure electric installations are carried out by certified personnel,” he advised.
