Eyes of the world on CAF over decision on Super Eagles botched 2025 AFCON qualifier in Libya

The attention of world football is on CAF as they deliver their ruling on a botched 2025 AFCON qualifier involving the Super Eagles and Libya.

The hostage situation the Super Eagles found themselves in Libya two weeks ago was a major international news item and attention is now on the verdict of the continental football ruling body.

On Tuesday, CAF President Patrice Motsepe in an address to the CAF general assembly in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, spoke tough against countries hostile to visiting teams, while stressing on the need for good sportsmanship.

He acknowledged that this lack of sportsmanship has existed for a long time.

“We haven’t taken effective action (against countries),” he admitted.

“If there are violations of those regulations and rules, we will take action.”

Former Super Eagles star Taribo West said he expects CAF big hammer to fall hard on Libya.

“I expect heavy sanctions against Libya,” said the former Inter Milan defender.

“It’s not only Nigeria who have been their victims, other teams have also been maltreated by this same country.

“They have been callous in their heart and their behaviour.

“This is not acceptable. They have to be stopped.”

A top NFF official said Libya will not go unpunished for how they maltreated the Super Eagles.

He said this particular incident has thrown the spotlight of the world on CAF and how they rule on it.

“The spotlight is on CAF, the whole world is watching especially after they closely followed the harrowing experience the Super Eagles were put through,” he reasoned.

Another official who was on the trip to Libya said CAF must through their ruling send out a clear deterrent to the North Africans against hostility.

“What Libya did was anti-football,” he said.

“So, it must be three points, three goals for the Super Eagles and a huge fine slapped on Libya to deter any one from such anti-social behaviour.”
