Kogi State Government Tackles Food Insecurity, Boosts Staple Crops

Kogi state government through the ministry of agriculture has put several measures in place since the beginning of the year to enhance staple crop cultivation in order to curb food insecurity in the State.

This was revealed by the Commissioner for Agriculture Mr. Timothy Ojomah while addressing members of Nigerian Association of Women Journalists (Nawoj) Kogi State chapter on a courtesy visit to his office in Lokoja, the State’s capital.

The Commissioner for Agriculture emphasized on the importance of ensuring food security in every state of the federation. He attributed factors like climate change, farmer-herder clashes and insecurity as major causes of food insecurity in the nation while appreciating the former governor for nipping such issues in the bud which made Kogi state farmers to thrive.

He declared that areas like Ibaji, other riverine areas have bumper harvest of rice and maize presently, adding that cassava will come later in the year. These three crops got more boost this year in the State.

Accordingly to the Commissioner “Kogi state is enjoying bumper harvest today as a result of our intervention, if you go across other areas you’ll see rice, they are harvesting, maize is about maturing, cassava will take some time. 500 farmers were empowered in poultry farming, goat and sheep farming will be supported. With government’s intervention I assure there will be succor for the people”.

On her part, the Chairperson Kogi state Nawoj Mrs Stella Edoka thanked the Commissioner for receiving the union warmly. She expressed trust in the ministry’s ability to empower women in agriculture to further strengthen the food supply chain in the State and nation at large.
