An as-yet unidentified motorcyclist and his passenger lost their lives in an accident along the Ota-Idiroko Expressway in Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area of Ogun State on Saturday.

According to the spokesperson for the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, Babatunde Akinbiyi, the accident occurred at about 9 am and involved a white Iveco truck with the registration number AAA 163 YJ and a motorcycle with the registration number DGB 498 UW.

Akinbiyi emphasised that eyewitness reports indicated that the motorcyclist had wrongfully overtaken the Iveco truck while speeding, leading to a collision with the truck.

The impact of the collision was said to have resulted in the deaths of both the motorcyclist and his passenger, while a third person sustained injuries.

He said, “A fatal road traffic accident involving a granite-laden truck (Iveco) with a white cab and a motorcycle occurred at Iju Market along the Ota-Idiroko road.

“The accident was caused by wrongful overtaking on the part of the motorcycle rider, combined with excessive speed, according to an eyewitness report.

“Three males were involved, with two dead and one injured.”

He noted that the injured victim was rescued by eyewitnesses, while the bodies of the deceased were taken to the Ifo General Hospital morgue.

“The injured victim was taken to a hospital by Good Samaritans before our arrival.

“The presumed deceased were evacuated by TRACE operatives and the police and taken to the General Hospital Ifo morgue by the police.

“While TRACE and the police sympathise with the families of the crash victims, motorists are once again urged to avoid excessive speed due to its potential consequences,” Akinbiyi concluded.

PUNCH Online reported on Friday that a motorcyclist travelling in the wrong direction on Carter Bridge in the Lagos Island area of Lagos State lost his life after colliding with a moving vehicle.

The spokesperson for the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, Adebayo Taofiq, confirmed in a statement that the motorcyclist was knocked down by a fast-moving vehicle.

The impact of the collision was said to have led to the motorcyclist’s death.
