NFF President Lauds Progress At Aper Aku Stadium, Seeks Alternative Venue for Super Eagles

The President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Ibrahim Gusau, has expressed his satisfaction with the ongoing renovations at the Aper Aku Stadium in Makurdi, Benue State.

During a recent visit, he highlighted the importance of having multiple venues for Super Eagles matches, citing the need for an alternative to the Uyo Township Stadium.

“It is becoming a major source of worry to me and other Nigerians that, in a country like Nigeria, we have only one stadium where we can play grade A matches involving the Super Eagles,” Gusau remarked.

“So, when I heard that the Governor had awarded a contract for the upgrade of facilities at the Aper Aku Stadium, I hurriedly came to see how we can assist. I must confirm that I am really happy with the quality of work on the ground.”

He assured that the NFF, through its technical director, is working closely with contractors to ensure the quality of the upgrades.

“I am really desirous to make sure that in the shortest possible time, we have an alternative stadium to Uyo, and with what I am seeing, I believe that alternative will be Makurdi.”

Gusau praised the commitment of the Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia, who emphasized the potential economic and unifying benefits football can bring. The Governor also pledged to revive the Governor’s Cup competition to discover young talents.

Monimichelle contractors, tasked with upgrading the stadium, affirmed their commitment to delivering on schedule. According to their CEO, the pitch has been converted from natural grass to high-quality artificial turf to lower maintenance costs. “We are using a type of grass never before seen in Africa,” he revealed.

The collaboration between the NFF, the Benue State Government, and the contractors is poised to improve Nigeria’s football infrastructure and foster greater opportunities for local and national football development.
