Nigerian graduate wins Germany’s research grant

A 27-year-old Scotland-based Nigerian graduate, Yusuff Adebisi, has won a grant from the Robert Koch Institute to research on combating antimicrobial resistance.

The grant was part of the German Federal Ministry of Health’s programme to support public health research in partner countries.

According to Adebisi, who graduated with a First Class in Pharmacy from the University of Ibadan, the “project focuses on tackling antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in West Africa, which is a critical global health issue.”

In an interview with Saturday PUNCH, the 27-year-old said West Africa had problems with healthcare infrastructure and limited access to essential medicines, thus the research was an initiative to solve the challenges.

Speaking about antimicrobial resistance, he said, “It occurs when microorganisms, like bacteria and viruses, develop resistance to treatments such as antibiotics, making once-treatable infections harder to manage. This has the potential to undermine decades of progress in medicine, posing a serious threat to public health.”

Adebisi had a master’s programme in Global Health Science and Epidemiology at Oxford University, in the United Kingdom.
