Obasanjo, US envoy in closed-door meeting

The United States Ambassador to Nigeria, Richards Mills, on Thursday, described former Nigerian President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, as a repository of knowledge.

This followed a one-hour closed-door meeting he held with the former president at his Abeokuta, Ogun State residence.

The US Ambassador said the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library in Abeokuta captured the real hope that all Nigerians wanted to see in no distant future.

Mills, while speaking during his visit to the library and the Penthouse residence of the former president, said it was a fascinating place to visit.

In a press statement by the former president’s media aide, Kehinde Akinyemi, the visiting ambassador hinted that he had a viable and open discussion with Obasanjo during the period.

After about an hour of private session, Mills embarked on a tour of the edifice before departing the complex.

“It is fascinating. It captures the real moment in time when there is so much hope in Nigeria. And, I think we all want to see that come back. It is also a little bit of history for people to see.”

On his session with Obasanjo, Mills said it was very viable, adding, “I had an open and frank discussion with the former President. He is a friend of the United States and we always learn with a visit to the former President Obasanjo.”

Obasanjo said that since the ambassador reported in the country in August, it had been a very busy schedule to host him and it was, therefore, pleasant for him to be able to eventually play the host.
