Super Falcons Coach Madugu Says Team is “A Work in Progress”

Following Nigeria’s 2-0 win over Algeria in their first leg of a double-header friendly, Super Falcons interim coach Justin Madugu praised the team’s performance but insists that there is still room for growth.

Madugu described the squad as a “work in progress” and pointed out the importance of giving new players the opportunity to prove themselves in competitive matches.

This is Madugu’s first match after the Resignation of Super Falcons former head coach, Randy Waldrum.

“It’s still a work in progress. We wanted to start on a good note, and the girls have started quite well on a good note,” Madugu said.

“We’re not saying we’re satisfied with the performance because it’s still a work in progress, but we need matches like this, games like this, to be able to test the players’ abilities, to see what they can also bring to the table, so that we ensure that at any time we select the best to represent the country.”

Madugu explained the importance of trust in player development, teamwork over individual brilliance and the value of learning from mistakes.

“If you don’t trust them to give them opportunities like this, how do they show what they can do? It is only when you give them opportunities like this… yes, they will make mistakes, and that is why we are there.”

“We want to see those mistakes so that we work on them and ensure that they become better. All of them are our players, so it would be unfair for me to now pick a particular player.”

“It’s a team thing. They all need each other, and that’s why they play the way they play. So it’s not about any particular player doing something very extraordinary.”
