Nigeria sealed a hard-fought victory against Libya, not a pretty one, but a victory nonetheless and Austin Eguavoen can heave a sigh of relief as the Super Eagles maintain their momentum in the 2025 AFCON qualifying race.
The Super Eagles interim coach stuck with his preferred 3-4-3 system, but deployed two DMs against an injury-hit Libya team, playing with a patched up squad – that gave up possession (65%-35%) and only attempted two shots all game – both were off target.
The coach had a cautious approach but also didn’t show a lot of invention in his strategy, predictably launching crosses from the wing – the left wing – which was repelled easily.
Eventually, after over 80 minutes, the Libyans cracked and a cut back cross from Moses Simon found substitute Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, who scored the game’s only goal.
Reacting to the team’s performance, former National team coach, Fatai Amoo, argues that there are yet lots of positives from the game for Eguavoen’s men.
“So far, they have done quite well. in terms of the result we might say it didn’t meet public expectation, but we played well overall,” Amoo told Brila.net.
“Their defence prevented us from get many scoring opportunities; the Center forwards didn’t get much on the chances, but our wingers tried.
“Moses Simon, Ademola Lookman and even Samuel Chukwueze all did well. Perhaps we could have given Chidera Ejuke minutes too, he’s a good dribbler and that can help creatively in a game of that nature.”
“Honestly, the Coaches did well with the substitutions in terms of creating chances. We only just need to reshuffle the team.”
“Our expectations are high because of past records, but if we bring in Pep Guardiola today, do you think he would be able to use some of the players that we have? Let’s be honest with ourselves.”
Amoo underscored the need to improve the team’s midfield with “a number 10”, and looking home based players – top quality – for that position.
“We’ve got great players in this country, I saw several in a recent competition, and if they exist out there, then trust me we have them in the league. “
