Apple Intelligence Arrives, But Not for Everyone (Yet)

Apple has released its long-awaited Apple Intelligence features, designed to improve user experience across various applications. 

However, not every device will support these advancements at launch, which is different from the company’s usual approach to software updates. Only the latest iPhones (15 Pro and Pro Max, all iPhone 16 models), iPads with A17 Pro chip (including the new iPad Mini) or M1 and later, and Macs with M1 or later can run Apple Intelligence.

This innovation will compete directly with OpenAI and Google’s AI, as it combines several advanced features into a user-friendly package, including writing tools, image enhancement, article summaries, and improved voice input for Siri. 

The rollout of Apple Intelligence will be phased. Even with compatible devices, users need to download the macOS Sequoia 15.1 update (iOS 18.1 and iPadOS 18.1 for iPhones and iPads) and then opt-in to a waitlist before accessing the features. 

This means that Apple is gradually ramping up server capacity for its complex AI system, ensuring a smooth user experience. 

Unlike some competitors, Apple Intelligence emphasises a “small model” methodology that trains AI for specific tasks using curated data sets, rather than relying on so much, unvetted data. This focus on privacy sets it apart in the global AI sector.

While the initial functionalities are great, future updates (iOS/iPadOS 18.2 and macOS Sequoia 15.2) aim to bring further features like Genmoji, Image Playground, Visual Intelligence, Image Wand, and even ChatGPT integration. 

Apple has not yet announced a release date for these upcoming features, which target the enhancement of user capabilities through its AI technology.

The new iMac, set to be available from November 8, is at the forefront of this release. Its design incorporates new colours, maintaining Apple’s aesthetic focus. The new M4 chip makes this upgrade even more interesting, significantly enhancing processing speeds and graphics rendering, and making tasks from video editing to gaming smoother and more efficient.

Another feature of Apple Intelligence is its focus on user privacy. This system offers solid security measures, ensuring that personal data remains confidential and inaccessible to anyone, including Apple itself. This is achieved through on-device processing that respects user privacy while still delivering intelligent assistance.

Among the features introduced with Apple Intelligence are advanced writing tools that assist users in drafting and refining their texts, natural language searches for photos and videos, and an innovative Image Playground for creative image generation. These tools aim to simplify workflows and enhance productivity, making the iMac a great choice for both casual users and professionals alike.

The iMac’s hardware improvements are equally great with its expansive 24-inch Retina display, users can enjoy a crystal-clear viewing experience, whether for work or leisure. The display is optimised for brightness and clarity, ensuring that content appears bright and engaging. This model also includes options for nano-texture glass, which reduces glare, ideal for varied lighting conditions.

Apple has not neglected the iMac’s audio-visual capabilities either. The updated 12MP Center Stage camera ensures that users remain the focal point during video calls, automatically adjusting to maintain framing. Coupled with high-quality microphones and a six-speaker system that supports Dolby Atmos, the iMac delivers an unparalleled video conferencing experience.

The macOS system pre-installed on the new iMac is built with seamless integration for popular applications, enhancing productivity. Users can mirror their iPhone displays directly onto the iMac, making multitasking between devices effortless and intuitive.

With a variety of ports, including up to four Thunderbolt 4 connections, the new iMac accommodates multiple external devices, enhancing its versatility for a range of tasks. The option to connect two external 6K displays opens new avenues for content creators and professionals looking to expand their workspace.

Apple is also integrating environmental responsibility, designing the iMac with recycled materials to minimise its ecological footprint, aligning with sustainability goals.
