Rivers Assembly Confirms Commissioner Designates

….Charges IG To Arrest LG Attackers

The Rivers State Assembly has confirmed the appointment of four commissioners during its sitting on Monday which was presided by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Victor Oko-Jumbo at the Government House in Port Harcourt.

According to a statement released on Monday by the Special Assistant on Media to the Speaker, Rivers State House of Assembly, Stephen Banigo the commissioners were screened and confirmed having found them worthy in character and capacity

The speaker commended the outgoing commissioners for their excellence in the discharge of their duties while charging the newly appointed commissioners to walk the path of diligence and show commitment in their offices.

The commissioners include Hon. Israel Lebura Ngbuelu, Hon. Evans Bapakaye Bipi, Barr. Otamiri John Ngubo, and Hon. Barr. Benibo Anabraba

However, Hon Speaker expressed his dissatisfaction with the security crisis in some Council Secretariats across the state, noting that from reports at his disposal, there were “pockets of violence within certain Local Governments in Rivers State”

Following the just concluded Local Government election, Rivers State has witnessed crises showcasing political frictions and supremacy between the governor, Sim Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, who is the FCT Minister.

On Monday, the secretariat of the Eleme LGA in the state was set on fire, as buildings and vehicles were set ablaze following an explosion from a device suspected to be dynamite.

Similarly, the Ikwerre Local Government Secretariat was also set ablaze as the Rivers State LGA crisis rages on.

The Speaker called on the Inspector General of Police to fulfil his constitutional duties by arresting the criminals who have chosen to set fire to State government buildings.

He also stated that the Governor had demonstrated extraordinary moderation and professionalism in handling the provocations he is currently faced with, which the Assembly supports.

He added that the State had invested so much for peace while urging the government to apprehend the defaulters to curtail what he noted as “very unpatriotic acts without legitimate repercussions” while also protecting the dividends of democracy.

The plenary which was graced by former principal officers and members of the House was thereafter moved to Thursday, October 10, 2024.
